How to identify original saffron
Color test
Real saffron releases a golden-yellow color when soaked in water. Fake saffron may turn red immediately.
Smell and taste
Genuine saffron has a strong, sweet aroma but tastes slightly bitter. Fake saffron may lack fragrance or taste sweet.
Thread appearance
Original saffron strands are deep red with a slight orange hue at the tips. Fake ones appear uniform in color.
Solubility test
Rub saffron strands between wet fingers – real saffron won’t break easily and retain its color. Artificial ones may dissolve or stain.
Cold water test
Drop saffron in cold water; real saffron will slowly release color. Fake saffron colors the water instantly.
