Vijaydashami or Dussehra – History and Significance
People across the country celebrate Vijayadashami or Dussehra accepting their version of belief. From North to South, you will get different meanings. But all stories meet one point, i.e., it is the victory of good over evil.
Here are some legends about Dussehra/Vijayadashami:
- Durgapuja is observed with great enthu in West Bengal. They consider Durga Maa as their daughter. Bengalis call Maa Durga as ‘Uma’. Like how a married daughter comes to her parents’s house, Durga Maa also comes to her father’s home with her sons and daughters together. She lives here for four days and goes back again to her husband’s place.
- Northern India has a different story behind it. This is related to Lord Rama, according to Ramayana, Lord Rama, the eighth incarnation of Vishnu wom over evil king Ravan. When Lord Rama was on his way to fight with Ravan, he worshipped Goddess Durga seeking her blessing. Eventually, he won.
- According to ancient texts, Goddess Durga was the cause to free the entire heaven and earth from the tyranny of Demon Mahishasura. By deceit, Mahisura had one blessing no male can kill him ever. So, he used to think that he was immortal as no female has the courage and ability to do so. After finding no way out, God created Durga to kill Mahisura.

Vijayadashami, or Dussehra is celebrated differently in different parts of our country. Delhi, Mysore, Varanasi, Kullu, and Kolkata- all these cities are famous for celebrating this festival with great joy. In certain locations, people participate in public processions, and in Ram Leela. The Ravan Dahan custom is also very famous and spread over multiple cities.
One most crucial parts of the celebration is the breaking of firecrackers. In addition, people start to perform the entire Ramayana beginning 10 days before the Dussehra festival. - Worshiping Weapons: As we all know, Durga Maa vanquished the demon on this day, this day is also known as Shastra Pooja and Ayudha Pooja. The Gods praised her weapons when she won. On the day of the Vijayadashami festival, people worship their weapons and pay homage to the goddess.
Dussehra 2024 Celebrations
On Dussehra, people in Northern India celebrate the victory of good over evil by doing a very famous custom – the Ravan Dahan. Also, people wear new clothes and host large celebrations together. In some parts of India, you will get to see the Ram Lila show. This depicts the life story of Rama, how Sita Maa was caught by Ravan, and how Prabhu Ram brought her back. Then, in public spaces all around the nation, the effigies of Ravana, his brother Kumbhakaran, and his son Meghanada are set on fire.
