Teachers Day 2024

World Teachers’ Day is observed every year to recognize the contributions that teachers make to our lives as well as to society. On this day, we honor our respected teachers who commit their lives to educating and molding the minds and futures of young people.

‘Teachers’ Day’ means for special honor and remembrance to the special figures of our country. That is why it is celebrated on different days in different countries. In India, this day is celebrated on 5th September to honor the great teacher and second President Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan. Whereas, in 1994, UNESCO declared 5th October as World Teachers’ Day. Many countries observe the day on this UNESCO-designated date. In this blog, as Indians, our focus will be more on 5th September and we will discuss more about its history and significance.

Teachers’ Day : History

In India, September 5th is recognized as Teachers’ Day in honor of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan’s birth anniversary. Not only was he a highly regarded academic scholar, but he also held the positions of first Vice-President, second President, and Bharat Ratna. He also has an extensive career of serving in top positions in various universities. Dr. Radhakrishnan is considered one of the most influential and distinguished persons of 20th-century scholars of Comparative Religion and Philosophy. It’s his birthday, September 5, 1888. He advocated for education as an educationist and was a renowned scholar, diplomat, and most importantly, an excellent teacher.

India elected Dr. Radhakrishnan as its second President in 1962. On September 5, a large number of his students went to him to ask whether they could celebrate his birthday. But instead of permitting them, they told them to celebrate September as Teachers’ Day, rather than quietly celebrating my birthday. The proposal from the Indian President adequately expressed Dr. S. Radhakrishnan’s love and devotion to teachers. Since then, India has celebrated September 5th as Teachers’ Day.

Teachers have the power to mold young people into future leaders who will guide India in the correct route. It is often said that children are a nation’s future. They have a significant impact on our lives since they enable us to launch prosperous enterprises and professions. They assist us in developing into more respectable members of society, excellent citizens, and exceptional citizens of our nation. In honor of the difficulties, struggles, and unique responsibilities that educators play in our lives, we commemorate Teachers’ Day.

Why do we celebrate Teachers’ Day on September 5?

In India, we celebrate Teachers’ Day on September 5 to honor the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. He was a great scholar, philosopher, and India’s second President. When he became President in 1962, his students sought his permission to celebrate his birthday. But Dr. Radhakrishnan suggested to them that,  “Instead of celebrating my birthday separately, it would be a privilege if 5th September is observed as Teachers’ Day”. Since then the tradition has continued to honor our respected teachers across the nation.

Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan always wished for improved academic standards and the growth of a solid connection between the teachers and the students, and the teaching approach. He thought that teachers should try to win over their students’ hearts and that respect for youngsters should be earned rather than given. Teachers provide the groundwork for producing morally upright individuals. Therefore, this day has been designated to honor and thank our teachers for their dedication to our growth.
