International Women’s Day, on March 8th is a global call for women’s rights and gender equality. It reminds us that we should join the voices of people all over the world in highlighting the fact that women’s rights are fundamental human rights and they deserve recognition and respect.
This day unites people across cultures and communities to honor women’s diverse identities, including race, ethnicity, faith, ability, and gender or sexual orientation. International Women’s Day has a history behind it, it has come after long struggle, wait and agony. The day pays tribute to those who paved the way, those who continue to fight, and those who will carry the torch forward.
The roots of International Women’s Day trace back to 1908 when 15,000 women in New York marched for suffrage, fair wages, and humane working conditions against the appalling working conditions and exploitation in men’s society.
Inspired by their courage, the Socialist Party of America proposed a National Women’s Day in 1909 to advocate for women’s suffrage. The very next year, this movement turned global and the Socialist International nodded for International Women’s day. By 1911, more than a million people attended rallies in Europe to commemorate the first International Women’s Day.
Throughout the 20th century, International Women’s Day was a focal point for social justice movements and was acknowledged and celebrated by grassroots activists for social justice and gender equity. It was officially recognized by the United Nations in 1975, during International Women’s Year, cementing March 8 as a day to celebrate progress and champion the ongoing fight for women’s rights worldwide.
