This year will be regarded as the 78th anniversary of Independence Day as 2024 draws near.
The government of India has not yet declared the theme for its Independence Day celebration in 2024. The theme of the 2023 Independence Day celebrations was “Nation First, Always First,” which was a part of the larger “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav” events.
Independence Day: History
India got its independence from the clutches of the Britishers after 200 years of agony and oppression. Our country has a long history of fighting behind this and we have paid a hefty price for this. It is the day when India was declared as a sovereign country and ended the British colonial rule. Independence was not easy for us, after the tireless efforts and immense sacrifices made by countless freedom fighters who fought to liberate India from British dominance, we got freedom.
The Early Colonial Period
The British East India Company started trading in India at the beginning of the 17th century and gradually grew in strength and renown. By the middle of the eighteenth century, the British had established significant influence over Indian territories after the Battle of Plassey in 1757. The manner the Company had abused and enslaved the Indians had severely enraged them.
The First War of Independence
The First War of Independence, which occurred in 1857 was the Sepoy Mutiny by Mangal Pandey. Even though it was put down in the end, this rebellion served as the impetus for the nationalist movement that challenged British control. After that, in 1858, the British government shut down the East India Company and seized total authority over India, creating.

Rise of Nationalism in India
Indian nationalism began to gain traction in the late 19th and early 20th century. Founded in 1885, the Indian National Congress (INC) gained popularity as a forum for the expression of Indian aspirations for independence. Leaders such as Dadabhai Naoroji, Lala Lajpat Rai, Bipin Chandra Pal, and Bal Gangadhar Tilak played a major role in pushing for more autonomy.
Non-Cooperation and Civil Disobedience Movements
When Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi returned from South Africa in 1915, he launched a new phase of the freedom movement. Gandhi’s appeals for peaceful resistance and civil disobedience inspired millions of Indians. Gandhi led the Non-Cooperation Movement (1920–1922) and the Civil Disobedience Movement (1930–1934), two significant initiatives to oppose British authority without resorting to violence. These movements saw widespread participation from various sections of Indian society.
The Quit India Movement
Gandhi’s declaration of the Quit India movement on August 8, 1942, was a significant turning point in the battle for independence. Large-scale rallies and walkouts against British rule were among the protests against the British government that were sparked by a popular yearning for quick independence. The British employed harsh repression in retaliation, imprisoning leaders and locking up protestors, but the movement had significantly reduced their influence in India.
Path to Independence
India’s journey towards independence was greatly expedited by the Second World War. The crippling effects of the war and the growing resistance from the nationalist movement meant that the British realized they would soon be unable to control India. The process of moving India closer to independence began in 1945 when the pro-Indian Labour Party took power in Britain.

Partition and Independence
The nation’s path to independence was obstructed by religious conflict between Muslims and Hindus, which led Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s All-India Muslim League to demand the establishment of a distinct Muslim state. Notwithstanding its best efforts to maintain India’s unity, the British administration encouraged the country’s independence. On August 15, 1947, India gained its independence, opening the door for Pakistan and India.
The joy of independence was followed by a sorrowful separation that drove millions of people from their homes and communities. Even yet, August 15th remains a day of great pride and joy for Native Americans, representing the victory of resilience, solidarity, and the unwavering spirit of independence.
