Gudi Padwa 2025 : History and significance

Gudi Padwa is a combination of two words. Gudi means the flag and Padwa comes from the Sanskrit word pratipada, which means the first day of a lunar fortnight.

It is believed to be the day that the universe was created by Lord Brahma. But according to another legend, this day is commemorated to mark the coronation of Lord Ram following his 14-year exile and his return to Ayodhya with his brother Laxman and wife Sita. The traditional Gudi, which is raised outside the house during the puja, represents his victory over Ravana.

Gudi Padwa 2024: Celebrations and Rituals

On the day of Gudi padwa, people take holy bath in the morning and start rituals of the festivals. The day begins with a special oil bath and eating neem leaves, according to the scriptures. They eat neem leaves with jaggery. People decorate their homes and living places with rangolis, flowers and other decorative items. People make Gudi Padwa special festive delicacies like Puran Poli, halwa, batata vada and Shrikhand. People also believe that hoisting a Gudi is very auspicious for them. It brings good fortune, health, happiness and luck for them. People wear traditional attire and visit temples for blessings.

Devotees worship Lord Brahma on the day of Gudi Padwa and offer him Bhog prasadam. After the puja, they distribute this prasadam among themselves and others. They also distribute gram flowers and cumin seeds along with the prasadam. Some devotees perform havan and yajna for some of their special wishes.
