Ganesh Chaturthi History
We celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi with great enthusiasm and effort all across the country, especially in the state of Maharashtra. This festival has a great story behind it. As per the legends, Lord Ganesha is the son of goddess Parvati. She wanted a child, so one day, she took some sandalwood paste that she used for her bath and molded it into the shape of a little boy. With her magical powers, she brought the figure to life and named him Ganesha. Parvati loved Ganesha very much.
One day, Parvati asked Ganesha to stand guard at the door while she took a bath. She told him not to let anyone in. Ganesha took his job seriously and stood by the door. He was ready to protect his mother from any intruder.
Just then, Lord Shiva, Parvati’s husband, came home. He wanted to see Parvati, but Ganesha, who had never met Shiva before, stopped him. Shiva was very surprised and became very angry. He didn’t understand why this little boy was stopping him. In his anger, Shiva used his powerful trident to cut off Ganesha’s head.
When Parvati came out and saw what had happened, she was furious with anger. Parvati was ready to destroy everything. Seeing her in this condition, Shiva realized his mistake and wanted to make things right. He promised Parvati that he would bring Ganesha back to life.
Shiva sent his followers to find the head of the first creature they saw. Soon, they returned with the head of an elephant. Shiva placed the elephant’s head on Ganesha’s body and used his magic to bring him back to life. Ganesha was alive again, but now he had the head of an elephant!
Parvati was overjoyed to have her son back, and Shiva declared that Ganesha would be known as the remover of obstacles and the god of wisdom. From that day on, people began to worship Ganesha at the beginning of new ventures to ensure success and good fortune.
And this is why, every year, we celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi with joy and devotion, remembering the birth and blessings of our beloved elephant-headed god, Ganesha.
